NATURE  NEEDS KIDS ALBUM STORY:

The Children and Nature Movement, also called "Leave No Child Inside," is an international movement to reconnect children with the natural world.  When I read Richard Louv'd 2005 best-selling book, Last Child in the Woods--Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, the book that propelled this movement, it struck a deep chord in me.  My childhood, like others from my generation, was filled with nature and free play.  My fondest childhood memories are of being outside--day dreaming in my tree house, sleeping in a tent with friends, going to summer camp, roaming the neighborhood on my bike, or simply sitting on my porch wondering where the trail of ants was headed.

Today, we rarely see children in tree houses or playing outside at all.  They are living indoor, sedentary, de-natured and highly structured lifestyles.  One study by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that children are spending more than 6 hours a day (outside of school) "plugged in,"  The toll this is taking on their health is indisputable.  Research also shows that our natural world is equally at risk if our children don't get back outside where they can form a heart connection with nature.  Jane Goodall, on of my heroes, puts it very simply, "...only if we care will we help, only if we help shall all be saved."

Many have been inspired by Mr. Louv's book, and by the mounting research that shows children's direct contact with nature is essential for their health, and for the health of the natural world.  Parents, teachers, policy makers, doctors, urban planners, environmental groups, and others are all getting involved to bring more nature and unstructured play back into our children's lives.  Grassroots "Children and Nature" campaigns are being organized by concerned citizens around the world.  The Leave No Child Inside Central Ohio Collaborative, of which I am the co-founder, is excited to be part of this growing network.

Many of the songs on this album are inspired by nature, and by the Children and Nature Movement.  It is an album that I hope both children and adults will enjoy together.  I hope it makes you smile, dance, think, and want to fling open your doors and run outside and play!  I also hope it inspires you to learn more aout the Children and Nature movement.  So, please enjoy the music, and may our children find their way back outside, and into the healing arms of the natural world!  Jenny  p.s.  In memory of Ursula, our beloved fuzzy, ornery doggie
